The Resin Mill is committed in leading the permeable paving industry in minimising the impact of our activities on the environment.

We have a responsibility to the earth to make sure that we are socially responsible in the products we use and the solutions and services that we offer.

The key points of our strategy to achieve our Company Environmental Policy are as follows:

  • Minimise waste by evaluating operations and ensuring they are as efficient as possible.
  • Minimise toxic emissions through the selection and use of our fleet and power equipment.
  • Work towards greater recycling both internally and with our stakeholders.
  • Source products to minimise the environmental impact of both production and distribution.
  • Meet or exceed all the environmental legislation that relates to the company and review industry best practise.
  • Climate change is at the forefront of our policy and so we endeavour to act in the best interests of climate change at all times.

The activities the human race partake in have a negative affect on the environment and so we must do everything in our power to reduce the damage we are causing. The primary consideration is global warming and climate change which has resulted in greater rainfall and flooding across the globe. As a consequence of the floods in the UK in 2007 the majority of the homes affected were flooded by surface water runoff and not by overflowing rivers, (The Pitt Review). As of this from October 2008, all front of house developments, including driveways, patios and paths above 5 square meters, have to use permeable paving in order to combat the flash flooding. This is known as a Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SuDS). Resin bound deals with surface water run off in an environmentally friendly way, mimicking natural drainage by allowing surface water to drain through the open matrix structure.  Because resin bound surfacing is permeable, it is SuDS compliant, therefore you don’t need to apply for planning permission before your project commences. Find out more from government information regarding SuDS and planning permissions.

The Resin Mill’s resin bound permeable paving contributes to flood prevention with advantages such as:

  • Limiting Puddles – Because all the particles in the aggregates in The Resin Mill’s resin bound paving are fully coated in resin, a structurally strong and sound surface is created. However, when the resin bound gravel is laid on site, tiny voids are created that mimic natural drainage and allow the water to flow through and reduce the standing water which may cause slippages.
  • Natural Filtration – As the water flows through the permeable paving, it is cleaned naturally. As impurities and contaminants are removed, there is a reduction in pollution and water contamination though flash flooding.
  • Heat Island Effect – As urbanisation increase the surface temperature increases. This is because the land in cities is predominantly concrete, which absorbs heat thus making it significantly warmer. Permeable paving reduces the heat island effect because the pockets in the resin bound structure allow the soil to breathe, reducing the temperature.
Permeability is one of the reasons why resin bound permeable paving is becoming so popular over traditional methods such as block paving or tarmacking.
