What’s the difference between a resin bound driveway and a resin bonded driveway?

Although they sound very similar, resin bound and resin bonded are actually very different.

Resin Bound
Resin bound is an eco-friendly, highly porous paving solution for ground surfacing. It is a choice of decorative aggregates mixed with specialist resins then hand trowelled to give a flat smooth surface suitable for driveways, paths and patios.

Resin Bond
Resin bond is laid in a different manner to resin bound materials. It involves applying a layer of resin to the existing surface, which aggregates are then scattered in to the top of. This gives a non-porous surface, which has a coarser finish and leaves a certain amount of loose stone on the final surface.

How long will my resin bound driveway last?

The life expectancy of a resin bound driveway is over 15 years.

Do weeds grow through it?

We say your new resin bound system is weed resistant rather than weed free. Whilst nothing will grow up through the surface, air born seedlings may land on top, causing a small amount of growth. We recommend applying a weed killer once or twice a year if this should happen.

Can I lay my new resin bound drive over my old existing drive?

This depends on the type and condition of your existing driveway. However, it should be laid on an appropriate sub-base of either asphalt or concrete.

Do I need planning permission?

If you have an existing concrete or tarmac drive then planning permission will not be required. For any driveway extensions or newly installed driveways planning permission is required for surfaces such as traditional block paving, flags and tarmac. Your new resin bound surface will not require any planning permission, as it is fully permeable.

Will my new resin surface be slippy?

Your new resin bound driveway will be installed with a fine anti-slip coating to help prevent any slippages. As the surface is porous you won’t have any standing water which helps prevent sheet icing in winter.

How will it react with frost?

Your new resin surface is made with a polyurethane based resin, which not only offers incredible strength but also offers flexibility. This means that the surface will expand to allow for any frost that forms between the stones.

Can I put my caravan on it?

We would always recommend that a UV stable resin used where caravans, plant pots or doormats are left on the surface for extended periods of time. This will ensure that your surface stays a uniform colour throughout its lifetime.

Your new surface should take vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes when installed at the correct depth.

Does it smell?

The resin materials used have a limited odor during the installation period. However, once the surface has set it will be completely odor free.

How long until I can drive and walk on my Resin Mill drive?

The general rule of thumb is 4 hours for walking on resin bound paving and 24 hours for vehicle use. Dependent on the temperature however, this may increase. Please be sure to confirm with your Approved Contractor.

Is the resin toxic?

The resin bound materials are not toxic. Once installed, it is an inert material.
